Visit to the Museum of the Tonnara di Bonagia
"Salviamo le Tonnare" Association [Save the Tuna factories Association] has been working for years to defend and enhance an important piece of the history of Sicily and of Italy as a whole.
The Tonnare [Tuna factories] have represented for decades the economic and social centre for thousands of people.
The Association promotes activities designed to recover the memory and identity of an extraordinary population. It is working to recover the old "muciare", the large boats that were used for traditional tuna fishing from which the rais [the boss] during the mattanza [the slaughter] governed and guided the actions of the fishermen.
The association runs the Tonnara Museum, located inside the ancient tower of the Bonagia tuna factory complex, which contains historical fishing artefacts and more.
