The experience
Active from 1412 to 1969, today it is a place suspended in time: Punic cetariae tanks, abandoned stone buildings and a silence that the FAI recognised as a place of the heart in 2017. The natural close of the story of bluefin tuna in Sicily. In the new story the stop becomes part of a wider route among Monte Monaco, cliffs, caves and the Lighthouse, showing San Vito beyond the beach.
Town: San Vito Lo Capo
Categories: Tuna and Tuna Traps
Free walk among the historic buildings of the tuna trap, with external access.
A look at the remains of the Punic tanks used for processing fish.
A swim in the waters of the Zingaro, a few steps from the tuna trap.
Nature route along the cliffs of the western coast.
Visit to the Cave of the Horses, only where protection and safety conditions allow.
Continue to the San Vito Lighthouse to read the coast from the seafarers’ point of view.
Reach it at sunset, perhaps by e-bike from San Vito Lo Capo: it is the most evocative moment to photograph it. If time allows, continue to the Lighthouse to end the route at dusk.
Catch of the day and rockfish soup, accompanied when available by wild herbs from Macari and Castelluzzo.
