The place
Facing the square of the same name, at the centre of which stands the monumental eighteenth-century fountain, the Church of the Purgatorio in Marsala was originally the Church of Saints Fabian and Sebastian, whose statue stands out on the sumptuous main façade, framed by the two side bell towers.
The building, with an evident Baroque stamp, was enlarged after a plague and since 1601 has housed the Congregation of the Souls of Purgatory, from which it takes its name. Renovated in 1669 and completed in 1710, it is a perfect union with the architecture and urban setting.
The church has a basilica plan in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves, a transept and a tall, elegant dome. There are numerous eighteenth-century frescoes inside, as well as fine stucco ornaments.
