Grotta dell’Uzzo

Located inside the Zingaro Reserve, it is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the whole of Sicily, where the stratification found has made it possible to learn about the evolution of man over the last 10,000 years.

The community that occupied the cave was made up of a small group of hunters who lived in the area, and the cave must have served as a shelter for the night and defence against wild animals. Over the centuries the community learned to cultivate the land and to feed on the fish that must have been abundant in the sea very close to the cave. Burials dating back to the Mesolithic have also been found in the cave.
