The place

The Lago Preola and Gorghi Tondi Integral Nature Reserve is a wetland characterised by the absence of contact with the sea, with small lake depressions, flat lava fields and woodland scrub of great vegetational and bird interest.

The area, of almost 100 ha, is covered by the dense marsh vegetation typical of coastal Mediterranean, slightly brackish ponds.

Of great landscape importance are the patches of woodland of Quercus ilex and Quercus colliprinus.

The Capo Feto and Margi Spanò Marshes form a very particular natural environment, with a wide depression, separated from the sea by a sand bar, which in winter is flooded by sea water, while in summer it partly dries out; the vegetation consists of a rare combination of various plant associations, typical of both sandy soils and of wet or highly saline ones.
