The place

According to legend, the Church of San Giuliano was built by Roger of Hauteville in 1076, to thank the Hospitaller Saint who had helped his son Jordan drive the Arabs out of the city, appearing on a white horse with a pack of dogs.

Probably Gothic in form, it was renewed between 1612 and 1615, taking on its present appearance: gabled façade with a portal and a niche above it, of Renaissance tradition, three-nave interior with a high altar adorned with Baroque stuccoes

In 1927 it was closed because of a partial collapse and reopened, after almost 80 years, in 2005. The church keeps the “Misteri”, four statue groups representing episodes of the passion of Christ. In the adjoining rooms are collections dedicated to “ceroplastics” (wax modelling), an art already practised by the Romans which in Erice was the prerogative of the Carmelite nuns of Santa Teresa.

Next to it rises the eighteenth-century bell tower with a “pagoda” roof.
