The place

The coastal marshes of Margi Milo, Margi Spanò and Capo Feto are of considerable natural interest, designated Sites of Community Importance (SCI) and Special Protection Areas (SPA) for birds.

These natural biotopes are crucial areas for the passage of migratory birds of great importance and for some habitats suited to their survival. They are depressions, separated from the sea by a sand bar, almost entirely submerged in winter, while in summer the waters dry up.

This phenomenon is also a subject of study because of the presence of rare or endangered animal and plant species, such as Limonium ramosissimus siculum, Salicornia perennis and Asparagus acutifolius, which form prickly bushes. Among the birds that stop in the marsh are the curlew, the teal and, of considerable importance, the rare presence of the mallard.
