The place
A destination of pilgrimages since the seventeenth century, it stands on the site of an aedicule that contained the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary.
Construction work began in 1640 and continued until 1769, when the abbot Francesco Stacca completed the church, making use of the work of the Trapani architect Giovanni Biagio Amico and the painter Domenico La Bruna. The very simple façade is marked only by the corner stones and the portal with a broken pediment. The single-nave interior keeps, on the high altar, a fine canvas by the Trapani painter Andrea Carreca (c. 1590–1670) depicting the Madonna of Mercy.
No less interesting are the frescoes of the two side altars, depicting the Crucifixion (right) and the Nativity (left), attributed to La Bruna, to whom the paintings of the vault, set among eighteenth-century stuccoes, are also ascribed. In the adjoining sacristy is a carved and painted wooden cupboard, a fine piece of Erice craftsmanship of the eighteenth century.
