The place
It was built in the early years of the seventeenth century by the Trapani coral fishermen in thanksgiving for the catch of an enormous quantity of coral that came through the intercession of Saint Liberalis or Liberante.
It is told in fact that a Trapani coral fisherman, venturing close to the Tunisian coasts, was captured and killed near the place where Saint Liberalis had been martyred for not having renounced his faith in Christ. On the same day other Trapani fishermen made an enormous catch of coral. Returning to Trapani, the coral fishermen deposited the precious cargo at the place where, among the rocks, the church of Our Lady stood, which they later rebuilt and dedicated to Saint Liberalis.
The site has always been a place of devotion for the local fishermen who, on the day dedicated to the saint, organise celebrations in his honour.
