The place
Built in 1688 at the wish of Don Domenico Viola, to a design by the architect Pietro Castro, between 1712 and 1714 it was enriched with the façade designed by the Trapani architect Giovanni Biagio Amico, who made it in the Roman Baroque taste of Francesco Borromini (a moving, undulating façade through recesses and projections), crowning it at the top with twelve statues of Apostles in stuccoed stone by Alberto Orlando.
The central part of the façade rises like a tower and recalls similar architectural solutions in buildings of eastern Sicily, built after the earthquake of 1693.
The interior has a Latin-cross plan and comprises three naves divided by columns and arches; it keeps the “Misteri”, eighteen statue groups, in wood, cloth and glue of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, recalling episodes of the passion of Christ, and the images of Jesus in the urn and of the Sorrowful Virgin, which, carried on shoulders, parade from 2.00 pm on Friday to Saturday morning.
